Sheep Roundup

Come to Iceland and experience the horse and sheep roundup. Help the farmers to bring home the sheep to the community Ölfus from the summer grazing in the mountains.

Day 1. Arrival at Keflavik- transfer to Vellir and Hotel Eldhestar
After arrival at Keflavik, participants take the airport bus “Flybus” to BSÍ (the final station of the “Flybus”), where an Eldhestar representative will meet you at 17.30. From there, we will drive to the farm Vellir in Ölfus, in the Southern part of Iceland. After dinner you will get an overview of the next days and your specific task. Sleepingbag accommodation in cottages.

Day 2. Riding towards Hveradalir
We will make a short riding tour in the morning to the River Ölfusá and get to know our horses. After lunch we start riding towards the mountains. We follow the old Reykjavik Road up Hellisheidi, from where we have a magnificent view over the Ölfus area and to the Westman Islands. From there, we continue on soft roads, letting the horses find their way through the lava fields of the Hengill volcano, called Kristnitökuhraun.

Day  3. Riding and collecting the sheep in Hengill area
On day 3 we collect the sheep that are on the west side of the volcano Hengill. This is an adventure which requires a lot of hard work, but gives the participants a possiblity to experience both Icelandic nature and the spirit of the Icelandic soul.
The sheep are driven down to an enclosure at Kolviðarhóll, where the farmers start sorting out their sheep.

Day 4. Riding east of the Volcano Hengill
Today we will be riding in the area east of the volcano Hengill, between lava fields, hot springs and beautiful valleys. 

Day  5. Ölfusrétt – separating the sheep
The separating of the sheep starts at 9.00 in the morning and is finished around lunchtime. After the farmers have found their sheep, they drive them back to their farms. We are going back to Eldhestar for lunch and ride a half-day tour in the afternoon.

Day 6. A day ride – surprise!

Day 7. Transfer to Reykjavik
Transfer back to Reykjavik after breakfast, where the participants are free to spend the day as they like. Accommodation in a guesthouse in Reykjavik.

Day 8.
Breakfast and check out.  You can continue your journey in Iceland or take a flight home.
